Well... that seems strange for me to say since I manage a Standards organization. But in reality, members care more about having standards available and that the standards meet their business requirements. In fact, most members do not engage in the working group consensus building process. It's not easy work. The technical people tend to appreciate the banter as a learning experience. The business folks are just that... business oriented... and do not always appreciate the technical details. So we're working this year to make a few changes by re-organizing the process.
As for the longer view, it is very likely that a streamlined development process that includes comprehensive business and technical requirements gathering will reduce the need for consensus building as we know it. If you need a standard and it works, you may not care how its created. This is especially true if the standards become simple to consume and easier to update. So we are also looking for ways to assist with implementation.
Faster standards development... simplified consumption... painless updates... across all software applications, platforms and exchanges is our future. On this... I am sure... we have consensus.
