Intel has announced a new feature called Rapid Start. Rapid Start hibernates your notebook PC to NAND flash memory. This means you can power back on from cold in five or six seconds.
This is good, but it's still not great. We seem to be able to squeeze more and more bytes onto the head of a pin every year. Data transmissions speeds keep going up as well. But we're still too far from flick-of-the-switch IT.
It's funny that “on” remains the toughest nut for technology to crack.
