Water
is a scarce resource and needs careful management. This is especially so in
agriculture. When and where to use water are vital factors in agricultural
efficiency. The
problem is, manufacturers of agricultural machinery use different formats for
the relevant data. This makes it difficult and time consuming for farmers to
make the right decisions.
A
new industry body has been formed to create the data standards that will solve
this problem – and help to reduce energy use as well. Wherever
you see technology equipped with computing power, you're looking at a potential
data sharing problem. And a data sharing problem is a fixable problem. All it
takes is the active participation of the stakeholders in agreeing data
standards.
A local problem? Not worth the attention of non-specialists? Maybe – for now. But as our environment becomes more embedded with smart devices, the potential value of shareable data grows. I'm sure there are many in the insurance industry who can find a use for standardized, reliable data on phenomena like soil moisture content.
