Data is everywhere, and it's more and more central to the concerns of all kinds of organizations. This means all kinds of people are becoming alert to the value – the necessity – of data standards. The Mayor of the city of Hamilton in Canada is reportedly one of these good people: “Mayor Bratina impressed me with his question about data standards, noting the current state of open data is similar to the early railroads – we need to create standards to ensure communities can exchange data and developers can easily adapt their applications in other jurisdictions.”
Absolutely. And this snippet makes me ask: Is there any leader in any area of life today who doesn't need to echo and reinforce Mayor Bratina's intervention? Data is everywhere, so standards need to be there too.
