All the best stories begin with “Once upon a time...” Here's a great one from the mortgage industry: “Once upon a time, documents themselves were considered the most critical element of the loan package… Now, the script has flipped, so to speak, so that data trumps docs in the eyes of investors and regulators alike.”
Once upon another time, the distinction between documents and data was only interesting to data processing nerds. Business folks' eyes would glaze over. Today, two drivers are making decision makers understand the deep value of this distinction. The first driver is regulation. The second is collaboration. As is often the case, these drivers also interact with each other.
If you need to bring the distinction alive for any colleagues who are not getting it, I suggest you try this. Documents are for printing, reading, distributing, filing. They don't provide information flow, because the information is trapped in them. Documents are coffins for information. eLynx
