It's always a pleasure to welcome a new industry data standard to the scene. The latest to emerge comes from the Office Furniture Dealers Alliance, whose XML initiative aims to establish a common platform for receiving and sending content in the commercial office furniture industry.
Just another industry that's tired of competing data formats and wants to sharpen up its act? That's a driver, sure. But I bet people in this industry have a shrewd eye on what's happening with smart buildings and IoT. People will always want tables and chairs. Maybe office furniture will get smarter, with devices and connectivity built in. Maybe the desktop will mutate into, well, the desk. If you wanted to get your products and services into tomorrow's smart organizations, infiltrating their smart buildings via the furniture could be a great strategy. Starting with data standards now might just be the beginning of something really big. OFDA
